Exploring Careers in Research: Your Diabetes Experience Could Be Your Superpower

Maybe you want to find a career in diabetes but feel direct patient care isn’t for you but know you have so much to give to the community.  If you’re living with diabetes and have that curious, problem-solving mindset, a career in research might be the right fit for you. Not only is your lived experience relevant, it’s an advantage!

What Does a Research Career Actually Look Like?

Let’s be real: when most people think “research,” they picture someone in a white lab coat running experiments and using all the funny looking lab equipment. While that’s definitely one path, research careers are way more diverse than that! Research is basically professional problem-solving, and in the diabetes world, there are SO many problems that need solving.

There are a diverse range of roles in diabetes research. You may be on a team working to optimize infusion sets for insulin pumps or maybe a person collecting data on the increase of diabetes prevalence. The day to day varies wildly depending on your role, but expect a mix of planning studies, collecting and analyzing data, writing up findings, and collaborating with teams.

Your Options: More Than You Think!

Research Assistant/Associate

This is often where most people start! A research assistant is a great starting point to see if research is the right career path for you! If you love it then that’s great, and if you don’t you’ll still gain skills that will help you on another path. Research assistants provide direct support for ongoing projects under supervision, handling tasks like data collection, literature reviews, and administrative support, often with a bachelor’s degree. A Research Associate typically has more experience and a higher level of education, such as a master’s degree, allowing them to design experiments, analyze data more independently, manage projects, and contribute to the publication of findings. 

Clinical Research Coordinator:

This person manages the daily operations of a clinical trial, serving as the primary link between the research team, sponsors, and participants. They are responsible for crucial tasks including participant recruitment and screening, obtaining informed consent, managing data and documentation, ensuring compliance with the trial protocol and regulations, and monitoring participant safety.

Data Analyst/Biostatistician:

Love numbers and patterns?  A data analyst applies advanced statistical methods to biological and medical data to study, predict, and influence health outcomes related to diabetes. Their work can be found in academic research centers, pharmaceutical companies, healthcare organizations, and public health agencies. 

Academic Researcher:

Leading your own research program at a university, designing studies, mentoring students, and contributing to scientific knowledge.

Industry Research:

Working for companies developing diabetes technology or medications, involved in product development and testing new devices.

A master’s degree can open more doors—consider public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, or clinical research programs. Some even focus specifically on diabetes.

For leading your own research:

A PhD is usually necessary if you want to design and lead studies. Real talk—this is a significant time investment (4-7 years), so make sure you’re passionate about it.

Follow diabetes research organizations on social media, attend virtual conferences (many are free for students!), and reach out to researchers whose work interests you. Don’t underestimate networking! Don’t be shy about mentioning your diabetes connection, most researchers find this perspective valuable.

Gain experience:

Look for research assistant positions, internships, or volunteer opportunities. Consider reaching out to your professors who are doing research, even volunteer work can lead to promising job opportunities!

Build your skills:

Learn basic data analysis (even Excel skills matter!), get familiar with research methods, how to write research material, and practice science communication.

TBH:

Research careers aren’t for everyone, take some time to think about your goals before you jump in! You may have to work a few years to build that salary, the pace can be slow (studies take years), and academic bureaucracy can be frustrating.

Plus, the diabetes research field is constantly expanding with innovative companies emerging and new technology releasing Now more than ever with a recognition that patient perspectives are crucial.
