Finding your Why: Louie’s Story

Written by: Louie Sanchez

Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact diabetes had on my grandmother. I saw her struggle with the complications of diabetes, and ultimately, I saw how it took her life. It was this experience that ignited my passion for advocacy. At the age of 12, I began my journey as a volunteer, driven by a desire to make a difference for others facing the same challenges my grandmother did.

Over the years, my commitment to diabetes advocacy has only deepened. I’m a longtime volunteer of the American Diabetes Association and recently served as co-chair of the National Advocacy Committee, where I had the privilege of helping to shape state and federal public policy. Today, as a board member of the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (DPAC), I continue to advocate for the rights and well-being of those affected by diabetes.

Why do I advocate for people with diabetes, even though I do not have diabetes myself? Because I believe in the power of community and compassion. I have seen how a collective effort can drive change and improve lives. The advocacy community is filled with people who care deeply and work tirelessly to support those with diabetes. This network of dedicated individuals is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a common purpose.

DPAC is committed to advancing advocacy principles that make a tangible difference. We focus on ensuring access to affordable insulin, promoting diabetes education, and pushing for policies that protect, prioritize and empower patients. Our mission is to create a world where no one suffers from preventable diabetes complications.
